Droog design Ferrero1947

Droog

Droog Design is a collective of Dutch designers who design and self-produce contemporary and experimental furniture,
lamps and objects. Many of them, after the first works with Droog, have become very famous, starting to collaborate with
the most famous design companies, among them: Marcel Wanders, Nella Jongerius, Tejo Remy, Richard Hutten,
Juegen Bey …
The Dutch name Droog means “dry, dry” precisely to underline the pure interest in design, without any accessory
element deemed unnecessary; the collective was born in 1993 from an idea of Gijs Bakker and Renny Ramakers, after
obtaining a very positive response on the occasion of an exhibition curated by themselves in Milan during the
International Furniture Fair, showing the works of young Dutch designers . After this experience, the 2 founders,
comforted by the great critical success, entered into an agreement with DMD (Development Manufacturing and
Distribution) to produce their products, many of them in limited edition and to be able to sell them in their headquarters
in Amsterdam and in Worldwide.
In the following years the exhibitions and presentations during the Milan International Furniture Fair continued with
unchanged success and regular cadence and the collective also found an agreement with the Central Museum to
permanently present the entire Droog collection. The great intuition of the two founders was precisely to tie the
designers into a single collective, having a more bursting and incisive form of feedback on the public and at the same
time to agree with an important museum institution that would guarantee seriousness and high prestige.
The duo, assisted by all the designers, developed from 2000 onwards a real Droog concept, very recognizable and
always brilliant, in different sectors, always remaining faithful to the same principles of originality and clarity, coming to
create an archive of more than 150 products, often produced also in collaboration with important specialized
companies, such as Rosenthal for a project on ceramics and porcelain.
In 2009 Gijs Bakker left the direction of Droog Design, while Renny Ramakers continued and continues to carry on the
discussion with unchanged energy and pursuing the same philosophy: to recognize the high conceptual value, starting
from an intuition, a reasoning or a sensation and reach a “dry, dry” product, without fringes, rigorous and in clear
contrast to the designer design.
Among the most successful products the Marcel Wanders “Knotted Chair”, the “Chest of Drawers” chest of drawers by
Tejo Remy, the “Hippo Mat” hippo-shaped mat by and Annink, the apparently improvised “85 Lamps” chandelier by
Rodi Graumans and the lace screen, which casts a romantic shade of leaves, named after Chris Kabel’s “Skydilace
Parasol”.

Usm - Ferrero1947

USM

USM was founded in 1885 as a metallurgical and forging company by Ulrich Schaerer. The factory and management were and still are in Munsingen, Switzerland. In the early decades of the twentieth century, USM began to specialize in window accessories, ornamental hinges and precisely worked steel sheets. In the 1960s, the transformation into a furniture factory worldwide took place; Paul Schaerer joined the company in 1961, starting three generations of USM management of the Schaerer family. After studying engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, he is determined to renew the company – starting from the same factory and USM headquarters; He then commissioned the architect Fritz Haller to design a new office and factory pavilion using a modular construction system in flexible steel, easily adaptable to various production processes and changes in the sector.

In 1963, Haller and Schaerer created furniture that is in tune with the modularity and versatility of the new factories. Furniture, like buildings, are not focused on individual pieces, but on a system of steel modules that can be adapted and reconfigured to meet the different needs of the factory and the company’s offices. The foundation of the system is an elegant and ingenious ball joint, for which they require a patent in 1965.

Although initially designed for exclusive use in USM offices, the furniture system quickly draws attention thanks to its versatility, durability and style; consequently the production and commercial sale of the USM Haller system began in 1969 with an order of 600 workstations from the Rothschild Bank in Paris, France.

During the last decades of the twentieth century, USM conquered the world, opening branches in Germany, France and the United States and also the first exclusive exhibition space in Hamburg, Germany in 1998. In the following year, USM launched USM Kitos, a series of customizable and height adjustable desks and tables.

Shortly thereafter, the fourth generation of the family joined the company, represented by the current CEO Alexander Schaerer. The status of USM Haller as an icon of modern design is confirmed in 2001 with the exhibition in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. USM continues to develop its leadership in protecting the environment and in 2007, the company received Greenguard accreditation, which certifies that its products have low emissions of chemicals and particles and therefore help to reduce indoor air pollution; USM furniture is the first European product to meet the strict Greenguard criteria.

In 2015, the 50th anniversary of the creation of the USM Haller modular furniture system was celebrated, also through constant and continuous updating in harmony with new housing and working needs.

Living divani - Ferrero1947

Living Divani

Perfection and harmony in proportions and understated luxury flavor are the sign of recognition of Living Divani, a family-run company, which has made the padding its trademark. From the early 70s to today, the company traces a precise path, establishes an intense dialogue with modernity and becomes one of the reference points in the design panorama.

Strategic is the collaboration with Piero Lissoni, who since 1988 in the dual role of Art Director and designer, orchestrates its unique style, infusing the company with its unmistakable design figure made of discretion and formal neutrality, lightness and dynamism, with a calibrated design , essential, which combines the clarity of lines and shapes, with ergonomics and comfort.

Over the years, architects Piero Lissoni have been involved with designers of international caliber, who share the trait and the design approach with the company, as well as projects of young talents who have come to the company through a punctual talent scouting work among the new design levers: different visions that although unique in their individuality, have the same common denominator, the theme of harmony and the ‘delicacy’ of the forms, the praise of linearity, formal cleanliness, such as the Family Chair collection by Junya Ishigam.

An articulated offer of sofas, armchairs, beds and accessories was thus created; a gradual creative and productive process, which revolves around the padded system, be it indoor or outdoor, with discrete shapes and volumes, around which stronger-looking accessories are proposed – chairs, armchairs, tables, coffee tables, bookcases, containers and rugs – which adapt and define every environment, from the most essential and rigorous ones to the most eclectic and decorative ones. Among the most iconic models we must certainly mention Extra Wall and Extra Soft, Softwall Bed, but also the Frog armchair, all in their possible variations for indoors and outdoors.

Next to the living area, the sleeping and outdoor areas have harmoniously developed. The beds are the natural development of sofas, also characterized by sober and neutral shapes; these include the Chemise Bed, Extra Soft Bed, Avalon Bed models … For the exterior, on the other hand, dedicated fabrics with a precise and solid touch cover shapes already used for the interior; a double function, which on the one hand emphasizes its versatility, on the other it creates furnishing solutions that allow a greater fusion between interior and exterior.

Living Divani’s proposal is also oriented towards the contract sector where quality, technical performance and customization possibilities make it possible to be present worldwide in different sectors: offices, banks, airports, hotels, waiting areas, museums, restaurants and showroom, always with clear characteristics of sobriety and refinement.

Delcourt

A durable and singular approach
When he appears for the first time on the French design scene, it is as Creator of the year at Maison et Objet fair. We are in 1999. Christophe Delcourt is in his thirties and showcases his first creations (objects and lighting) with the particularity of being at the same time their designer, their manufacturer and their editor. The whole at a time when the bare notion « Maison d’édition » is, if not inexistent, still confidential.

This singular approach though is not moved by any kind of mundane quest for independence, but only by the will to give a precise and perfectly mastered frame to what will quickly become a true signature. As a result, a collection of lighting and contemporary furniture pieces, drawn as close as possible to the materials (wood, bronze, metal, ceramics, leather, etc.) and according to traditional craftsmanship..

The French designer’s projects combine raw materials and sober and elegant lines, abundantly inspired by the beauty of natural materials and their ability to be part of the shape of an object thanks to their capillary characteristics such as the richness of the material and the color. The designer has repeatedly admitted that nature is the first inspiring element and initial part of his design process. In fact, in the natural world there are several incredible shapes that can be applied to furniture design: shapes, colors and textures, which can be combined in infinite different ways.
Delcourt’s work is a true testimony of his love for materials and for his deep devotion to artisanal and manual manufacturing; his projects, lamps or furnishings, are never fashionable or the result of rapid trends, but are timeless, refined and unique eternal objects, with the pleasure of seeing them grow old and the certainty that they will accompany you throughout your life.
Its main masters to be constantly looked at as an example and as a major artistic influence are some French design legends such as Jean Prouvé, Pierre Chareau and Jean-Michel Frank.
Recently the designer has completed his work with a specific collection of fabrics, materials and neutral and natural colors, to be used for his furnishings, further perfecting the personal and refined vision of the concept of living and living in his own spaces.
Delcourt’s studio and atelier continues to be in the heart of the 7th arrondissement of Paris, inside a sober and elegant courtyard, next to what was once the historic home of the master of French couture Yves Saint Laurent.

Azucena

Azucena

Founded in 1947 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua. The Italian brand Azucena has always stood out for its collections that combine formal elegance, luxury, pure and crisp aesthetics and a very high workmanship.
The brand that the architects decide to call Azucena from the gypsy name of the play ‘Il Trovatore’, is created both to collect some of their furniture projects to be used for the furnishing of the buildings they design themselves and to be able to individually produce some furniture that is part of a series of furnishings designed by them. The three designers then start a rich production designed by them to take advantage of a repertoire of furnishings available for the houses they design. They are furnishings, lamps and experimental objects, which boldly use new materials, combined with traditional ones in a surprising and contemporary way, combining and often overlapping industry and high craftsmanship. Lacquer, polished chromed brass, crystal are the preferred materials in a constant search for brightness, brilliance, and transparency, which sometimes alternate with the softness of the velvet or the richness of the leather.

With Azucena a unique, very refined collection comes to life, with a series of pieces that have become iconic in a short time, characterized by the union of different materials, but always sought after, and by the recovery of traditional stylistic forms; above all the Catilina armchair, almost a Roman throne, where you have to sit down in a composed way, a concept much loved by the architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni, but also the Cavalletto table, with sinuous and rigorous shapes, reminiscent of the drawing benches at the polytechnic of Milan, or the Chinotto armchair, a small off-scale not without irony.

The lamps have a privileged position within the Azucena collection: Luigi Caccia Dominioni pays particular attention to light and lighting fixtures, taking advantage of unusual materials and techniques in a new and modern way. The result is some models of extraordinary beauty such as the famous Imbuto floor lamp, with a clear reference reinterpreted in a sober and cultured way, or as the cast iron table lamp, where the name itself reveals the author’s technical choice, or even as the Monachella reading lamp, light, transportable thanks to a ring at the end of the rod, conceived by the architect Caccia Dominioni not casually, but inspired by the headdress of the nuns of a Milanese convent, which he was building.

In 2018, the Azucena brand was acquired by B&B Italia, which wanted to preserve and relaunch it, in an active vision of the Italian heritage, the historic brand returns to the market with a series of “modern classics” designed by the architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni since the end of the 1940s. Chairs, sofas, tables and lamps that have written the history of Made in Italy design and which return today as a testimony to class and quality.

m6 -Ferrero1947

M6

M6 is a project by Luca Montrucchio for Ferrero1947, which is born from the reflection on the behavior of the different materials and those who work in front of a fixed and predefined scheme.

The fulcrum of the project is a square, lightweight, tapered structure made of 6 mm diameter, black painted iron rod and completed by a horizontal cover with 2 vertical limbs to turn it into a seat or stand.

In a second phase, were selected six different materials : wool, glass, perforated sheet, leather, linen and wood rope, and the finished structure was assigned, with attachment the cover scheme, to 6 artisans, experts in their field, who interpreted the precise design of the designer, also technically solving the fundamental knots for the manufacture of the product.

The selection was rigorous:

for wool: the Dutch weavers of Thomas Eyck, who are experts in Irish wool work

for glass: Cristal King’s glassware in Turin

for the perforated sheet: the blacksmith of Roero Gatto

for the leather: the pellet and the Pinerolese saddle Calautti

for the flax rope: the ancient Massia hammer manufacture

for wood: Tesio, the historic Piedmont carpenter collaborator of Carlo Mollino

The result is a hybrid object, a table of chairs or seats, in all the different types, to be used individually or assembled with infinite combinations.

To complete the M6 collection there is a bench, obtained from the repetition of the module, with seat in monochrome patch fabrics, and a wall structure, with the same proportions and lines, with inserts in perforated black sheet metal.

M6 is available from November in the FERRERO1947 gallery in Turin, in corso Matteotti 15 or online by mail.
